  • Adelie penguins live all year round near or on Antarctica
  • During winter they spend their time on the ice pack
  • During summer, they move to the coast of Antarctica
  • They eat mainly krill
  • To hunt, they can dive 175m
  • It is said that these penguins have a very bad attitude. They can get very cross at visitors
  • Their rookeries are often very crowded and densely packed
  • These breeding grounds can be a long way from open water
  • Two eggs are laid mid- November
  • Chicks hatch in December
  • At three weeks old, the chicks join a creche while the parents get food
  • By mid February, the chicks are at sea
  • Less than two thirds of the chicks
  • They can live for 16 years
  • Adelie penguins can be 3kg to 6kg in weight and grow to 40cm to 70cm
