Gentoo penguins

Gentoo Penguins
The ones with bushy tails.

  • They have a thick bushy tail that sweeps from side to side as they walk.
  • Adult Gentoo penguins weigh about 5.5kg
  • There are about 300,000 breeding pairs
  • They are often found in smaller groups
  • They also don't mind mixing with other penguins
  • Pair bonding is strong, and they will mate with the same penguin each year.
  • Nests are made on low hilltops or open beaches.
  • Pairs are not attached to a specific nest and may chose a new one each year.
  • Once a nest is chosen and prepared, both mates will guard the nest and are fiercely territorial.
  • Two eggs are usually laid, but normally, only the second chick that was hatched in a more northerly location will survive
  • Gentoo penguin chicks can fledge from 62 to 117 days
  • These penguins are not know to be very punctual, and often miss the good times for breeding.
  • Young Gentoo penguins are very adventurous and have been spotted off the coast of Africa and New Zealand
